This method involves working with areas on the face where muscle tension or pain occurs, resulting from so-called trigger points — local thickenings in the muscles that can cause local or radiating pain. The goal is to relax tension, improve blood supply, and reduce pain and discomfort.

Trigger points are painful, hard "nodes" in the muscles, formed as a result of long-term tension, stress, injuries, or overload. They can cause local and radiating pain to other parts of the body.

Which facial muscles can have trigger points?

There are several muscle groups within the face that can be affected by trigger points, e.g.:

  • masseter muscle (m. masseter) — responsible for chewing; trigger points can cause jaw pain and headaches
  • facial muscles (m. frontalis, m. orbicularis oculi, m. orbicularis oris) — tension can cause pain in the eye, forehead, and cheek areas
  • neck and nape muscles — can affect facial tension and headaches/migraines

Facial trigger point therapy involves gentle pressure, massaging, and relaxing tense areas. The goal of the therapy is:

  • reduction of pain
  • reduction of muscle tension
  • improvement of blood circulation
  • increasing the range of motion of facial muscles

The therapy is performed manually by a specialist or using tools (e.g., balls, rollers), and is sometimes supported by electrotherapy.

Indications for therapy:

  • headaches (migraine and tension-type)
  • bruxism (teeth grinding)
  • facial pain and tension (jaw, forehead, eye area)
  • mandibular function disorders (e.g., bite problems)
  • stress and emotional tension manifesting in the facial muscles

Benefits of facial trigger point therapy:

  • relief of pain and tension
  • improvement of muscle function (e.g., with bite problems/bruxism)
  • relaxation and stress reduction
  • improvement in quality of life thanks to the reduction of chronic pain symptoms

Potential risks:

Although the therapy is usually safe, incorrect performance can result in:

  • excessive pressure on sensitive areas
  • tissue irritation due to overly intensive manipulation
  • in rare cases — exacerbation of muscle inflammation

What does a therapy session look like?

The therapy should include:

  • patient assessment — identification of tense muscles and trigger points
  • gentle massage and pressure on specific points — to relieve tension and pain
  • stretching and relaxation techniques — improvement of muscle elasticity and relaxation

A session usually lasts 30–60 minutes, depending on the patient's needs.

Facial trigger point therapy is an effective method for treating muscle tension that causes pain and discomfort. It can provide relief for headaches, facial tension, and bruxism. It is important that it is performed by a qualified therapist, which minimizes risk and increases effectiveness.
