PNF, or proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation, is a comprehensive kinesitherapy method developed in 1946 in California by Dr. Herman Kabat and Maggie Knott. It is based on neurophysiological principles of performing and developing motor activities, and its goal is to restore or shape correct movement patterns.

Benefits of PNF therapy

  • multisensory stimulation (touch, sight, hearing, proprioception),
  • improvement of coordination and balance,
  • increase in range of motion and muscle strength,
  • normalization of muscle tone,
  • holistic approach to the patient,
  • learning correct movement patterns,
  • painless course of therapy, tailored to the patient,
  • therapist-patient cooperation in setting rehabilitation goals.

Possible limitations

  • the method requires specialized training of the physiotherapist,
  • sessions are longer and more engaging than in standard rehabilitation,
  • difficulty in repeating exercises independently without supervision,
  • lower effectiveness in certain diseases (e.g., muscle atrophy, spinal cord injuries, MPD).

Contraindications

  • lack of patient cooperation,
  • severe medical conditions requiring hospitalization,
  • acute inflammation and fever.

The final decision on using the method is always made by a qualified physiotherapist,
taking the patient's health status into account.
